|
Many of you may know Trevor Stock as the past Editor of the CHBTC newsletter, the Caledon Comment, for 9 years- that alone is a significant volunteer contribution. What you may not know is that Trevor's volunteering covers 39 years at both the BTC and Club levels. In 1970 Tom East, then President of the Bruce Trail Association, suggested that it would be a great assistance if the Bruce Trail Guidebook contained colour maps, over the then used black and white maps. Trevor worked on this project, and subsequently became Chairman of the Guidebook Committee. Altogether, he spent about 20 years helping to prepare the Bruce Trail Reference Guide, an essential hiker's tool. |

And something that I did not know, Trevor edited the Bruce Trail magazine for approximately 5 years, in the late 70‘s, early 80's. Now Trevor was not just your “sit at the table” editor. Take that mental image and put a large backpack on it! For over 20 years, Trevor was a hike leader for the Toronto Bruce Trail Club, leading hikes and backpacking expeditions. For all his achievements over the years to assist the Bruce Trail Conservancy and its members at both the Conservancy and the Club level, Trevor was awarded an Honorary membership at the BTC Annual General Meeting this past September in Tobermory – at the awards dinner held on the Chi-cheemaun. Trevor's achievements over the years included - - editing a Bruce Trail Magazine with a front page in colour, honouring the 10 th anniversary of the BTA in 1977. - ensuring the correct conversion of the BTA Guidebook from miles to kilometers. -converting the Guidebook sequence to a south to north sequence. Since our signs said “ Niagara to Tobermory”, Trevor thought that a south to north sequence would be consistent. This occurred around the opening of the Queenston Cairn in 1987. A question that the nomination form asked was, “How many hours of volunteer work has he contributed to the BTC per year?” Trevor says, “Impossible to count the hours!” One thing that we do know is that Trevor's volunteering was definitely more time consuming when he was using a typewriter to type in all the changes to the Guidebook and as Editor of the Bruce Trail magazine. However probably the most painstaking and lengthy task for volunteers was producing the first Guidebook with colour maps. The maps were made, using government topographical maps as a base. These topographical maps were enlarged and then every contour, every stream, every road had to be separately traced in the appropriate colour onto mylar and then of course the Trail had to be added onto the maps. To delineate the Bruce Trail , Trevor used a very fine tape that he had been using in his work with printed circuit boards. Two hundred overlays were required to produce this one edition of the Guidebook! The total work on this eighth edition, dated 1974, took approximately three years. Another question that the nomination form for Honorary Membership asked was, “How has the nominee set a consistent example of volunteer leadership and initiative in the BTC over the years?” Well we think that “consistency” should be Trevor's second name! Imagine working with the BTC Guidebook for 20 years, Editor of Bruce Trail News for over 5 years, Editor of the Caledon Comment for 9 years! Trevor advises us that he enjoyed using his time and skills to assist Bruce Trail members and to help the organization as it progressed. Congratulations Trevor on a well deserved award! |
