Hockley Valley Reroute

On the south side of Hockley valley the Main Trail has recently been rerouted. The reroute begins as the Main Trail crosses the 3rd Line. Instead of re-entering the woods on the west side of the 3rd line it now continues down the 3rd Line until it reaches Hockley Valley Road. The Reroute then turns left and follows Hockley Valley Road until it reconnects with the established Main Trail at the entrance of the Hockley Valley Nature Reserve. A map of this reroute will be posted soon.

South Hockley Re-route

Effective May 18, 2009, a major change was made to the Bruce Trail between km 49.3 and km 54.0 (25 th Edition Bruce Trail Reference Guide). The main trail no longer follows either the 5 Sideroad or the 5 th Line of Mono, as it previously did for many years.

Beginning at km 49.3, within the property of the Taoist Tai Chi Centre at the northeast corner of 5 Sideroad and Airport Road , the main trail now heads north along the former Hockleycrest Side Trail. Where the side trail previously split into 2 branches, the main Trail follows the east branch to the north and west, into a pretty stream valley. The west branch of the Hockleycrest Side Trail remains as a side trail parallel to the main trail. From the north junction of the Hockleycrest Side Trail, the main Trail heads first north, and then west to reach a crossing of Airport Road . The new trail continues to the west of Airport Road along the edge of a field with impressive views over the Hockley Valley . It then turns north and descends sharply to arrive at a pond in an abandoned ski resort. Here, the new trail turns to the west again and enters the Bruce Trail Conservancy's Hemlock Ridges property, acquired in 2009. After climbing and descending 2 ridges, the main Trail arrives at the 5 th Line of Mono.

Also within the Hemlock Ridges property, 2 new side trails were opened, and a portion of the Hockley Heights Side Trail was relocated from the 5 th Line road onto a lovely forested ridge.

A further change was made to the main Trail to the west of the 5 th Line, so that the trail now crosses the road directly. This latter reroute was completed and opened in September 2009.

All the above new trails were officially opened with ribbon cuttings and an inaugural hike on September 27, 2009.

As a result of the reroute, the main trail is increased in length by 700 metres. The new route eliminated 3.7 km of trail along roads. The section between Airport Road and 5 th Line is particularly strenuous, with numerous steep hills both up and down.
