I am the newly appointed Land Steward of the recently purchased Hemlock Ridges property by the Bruce Trail Conservancy in the Hockley Valley. As a Land Steward, it is my responsibility to inspect my property at least twice a year, to check for environmental issues which may affect the property; eg. areas of erosion, invasive non-native vegetation, signs of vandalism , and property boundary encroachment. On my initial inspection, I identified an old car wreck, which had been driven deep into the property and left in a rusted decaying state. I approached Guyfer Auto Recycling in Caledon East, asking Danny Ferri if he could help us to extricate this garbage from our land. He quickly volunteered his flatbed services for us on a Sunday, and hauled the wreckage away. Dave Moule and I were then able to plant 20 new trees to replace this garbage. Volunteerism, whether by members or non-members, is the back-bone of the Bruce Trail Conservancy. |
